Do not go gentle into that good night

Dylan Thomas1914 – 1953

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Do you know the meaning of the poem “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”?

Dylan Thomas, the poet, was very worried about his dying father. He wrote the poem to urge him to fight to the last breath, that no matter how peaceful he might think death is, he must not give in without a struggle. This he says in the opening lines of the poems.

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Thomas says that the old age (his father’s elderly spirit) should ‘burn and rave’ (resist to succumb) at ‘close of day’ (when the final bidding comes). He reiterates the point home by urging his father, and other people at large to rage against the ‘dying of light’ (the darkness here signifies death).

He then goes on thus-

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Here, Thomas gives the example of wise men, saying that even though all the wisdom of the wise convinces them that the ‘dark is right’ (that death must come, and it is the final destination, the singular truth) , yet as their(the wise men’s) ‘words had forked no lighting’ (their deeds were not remarkably exceptional, that they did not distinguish themselves enough yet), they must not go ‘gentle’ (willing) into that ‘good’ (seemingly homely and serene) ‘night’ (death).

Thomas goes on to give examples of several kinds of people (good men, wild men, grave men) and their one last effort against the final slumber-

Having exhausted his examples, Thomas then pleads directly to his father to stay a bit longer, to curse or bless him (Dylan) if he may, with only his tears if it came to that.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,

Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I personally believe it is a very beautiful poem, one that everyone must know by heart. It creates in me a sense of motivation, a sense of purpose, that I need to make the most out of life where there still is time.

I hope it inspires others in a similar fashion.
