Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan 5 September 1888 – 17 April 1975) was an Indian philosopher and statesman who was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967.

One of India’s best and most influential twentieth-century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy, his academic appointments included the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta (1921–1932) and Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at University of Oxford (1936–1952).

Radhakrishnan was awarded several high awards during his life, including the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. Radhakrishnan believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”. Since 1962, his birthday is celebrated in India as Teachers’ Day on 5 September

When he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, 5 September. He replied,

“Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5 September is observed as Teachers’ Day.”

His birthday has since been celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India.
One day every year, we celebrate Teachers’ Day in honour of the teachers who spend so much time teaching us so many things.
This year, Teachers’ Day began with a school assembly in the hall where the headmaster delivered a speech. After that we adjourned to our classes, not to have lessons, but to enjoy ourselves.

My classmates gave a small party for the teachers who taught us. Each of us contributed a small sum of money to buy cakes, drinks and other tit bits. On that day we arranged the chairs and desks so that they surrounded an empty space in the middle of the classroom.

So began a round of eating, drinking and playing games with the teachers. Most of the teachers were very sporting and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was so different from having lessons.

The other classes gave parties too. So the teachers had to move from class to class and participate in the fun. I would think that this was quite tiring on the part of the teachers but they managed it. After all it was their day to enjoy and have fun.

One class even gave a short play for their teachers. I did not get to watch it as I was busy tidying up the classroom after the party.

All in all it was a great day. The whole school was immersed in an atmosphere of gaiety. So when the school bell rang for dismissal I felt a little sad that it should end, but end it must. The day was over and we went home tired but happy.

I am talking to you on the special occasion of Teachers’ Day. On this day, we gratefully remember the great educationist Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, whose dream was that “Teachers should be the best minds in the country”. Hence, Teachers’ Day is very important for all our people, for our students and even for all the parents, as the teachers lay the foundation for creating enlightened citizens for the nation.

On this day, I would like to recall the teachers who helped me in shaping my life. In India, Teacher’s Day (also called Teachers’ Appreciation Day or National Teacher’s Day) is celebrated on 5th of September, every year. The date was selected, because it is the birthday of a timeless teacher and the former President of India – Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. When some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, he said, “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege, if September 5th is observed as Teacher’s day”.The request showed Dr.Radhakrishnan’s love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, the 5th of September has been observed as Teachers Day, in India. Teachers have an influencing role in the life of every student. They are like beacons of light, guiding us in the formative years of our life. Teachers mould us and in the process and shape our future. शिक्षक दिवस

भारत भूमि पर अनेक विभूतियों ने अपने ज्ञान से हम सभी का मार्ग दर्शन किया है। उन्ही में से एक महान विभूति शिक्षाविद्, दार्शनिक, महानवक्ता एवं आस्थावान हिन्दु विचारक डॉ. सर्वपल्लवी राधाकृष्णन जी ने शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में अमूल्य योगदान दिया है। उनकी मान्यता थी कि यदि सही तरीके से शिक्षा दी जाय़े तो समाज की अनेक बुराईयों को मिटाया जा सकता है।

ऐसी महान विभूति का जन्मदिन शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाना हम सभी के लिये गौरव की बात है। डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन जी के व्यक्तित्व का ही असर था कि 1952 में आपके लिये संविधान के अंतर्गत उपराष्ट्रपति का पद सृजित किया गया। स्वतंत्र भारत के पहले उपराष्ट्रपति जब 1962 में राष्ट्रपति बने तब कुछ शिष्यों ने एवं प्रशंसकों ने आपसे निवेदन किया कि वे उनका जनमदिन शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाना चाहते हैं। तब डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन जी ने कहा कि मेरे जन्मदिवस को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाने से मैं अपने आप को गौरवान्वित महसूस करूंगा। तभी से 5 सितंबर को शिक्षक दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाने लगा।

डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन जी ज्ञान के सागर थे। उनकी हाजिर जवाबी का एक किस्सा आपसे Share कर रहे हैः—

एक बार एक प्रतिभोज के अवसर पर अंग्रेजों की तारीफ करते हुए एक अंग्रेज ने कहा – “ईश्वर हम अंग्रेजों को बहुत प्यार करता है। उसने हमारा निर्माण बङे यत्न और स्नेह से किया है। इसी नाते हम सभी इतने गोरे और सुंदर हैं।“ उस सभा में डॉ. सर्वपल्ली राधाकृष्णन जी भी उपस्थित थे। उन्हे ये बात अच्छी नही लगी अतः उन्होने उपस्थित मित्रों को संबोधित करते हुए एक मनगढंत किस्सा सुनाया—

“मित्रों, एक बार ईश्वर को रोटी बनाने का मन हुआ उन्होने जो पहली रोटी बनाई, वह जरा कम सिकी। परिणामस्वरूप अंग्रेजों का जन्म हुआ। दूसरी रोटी कच्ची न रह जाए, इस नाते भगवान ने उसे ज्यादा देर तक सेंका और वह जल गई। इससे निग्रो लोग पैदा हुए। मगर इस बार भगवान जरा चौकन्ने हो गये। वह ठीक से रोटी पकाने लगे। इस बार जो रोटी बनी वो न ज्यादा पकी थी न ज्यादा कच्ची। ठीक सिकी थी और परिणाम स्वरूप हम भारतियों का जन्म हुआ।“

ये किस्सा सुनकर उस अग्रेज का सिर शर्म से झुक गया और बाकी लोगों का हँसते हँसते बुरा हाल हो गया।

ఉపాధ్యాయుల దినోత్సవం (Teachers’ Day) భారతదేశంలో సర్వేపల్లి రాధాకృష్ణన్ జన్మదినం అయిన సెప్టెంబరు 5 తేదీన ప్రతి సంవత్సరం జరుపుకుంటాము. ఈ రోజు శెలవుదినం కాదు. ఉత్సవం జరుపుకొనవలసిన దినం. పాఠశాలలు యధావిధిగా తెరిచి , ఉత్సవాలు జరుపుకుంటాము. ఈ రోజున ఉపాధ్యాయులను జాతీయ, రాష్ట్రీయ మరియు జిల్లా స్థాయిలలో పురస్కారాలు, గౌరవసత్కారాలు జరుగుతాయి.

అదృష్టవశాత్తూ సంప్రదాయాలకు పెద్ద పీట వేసే మన దేశంలో ఉపాధ్యాయుడికి ఉన్నత స్థానమే ఉంది. అందుకే ప్రతి ఏడాది సెప్టెంబర్ 5వ తేదీన జాతీయ స్థాయిలో ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవాన్ని ఘనంగా జరుపుకుంటున్నాము. “టీచర్స్ డే”గా విదేశాల్లో కూడా అతి ఘనంగా ఈ వేడుకలను జరుపుకుంటారు. మన దేశానికొస్తే సెప్టెంబర్ 5నే ఈ ప్రత్యేక దినోత్సవాన్ని జరుపుకోవడానికి కారణం ఆ రోజు భారత ద్వితీయ రాష్ట్రపతిగా అద్వితీయంగా తన పదవీ బాధ్యతలను నిర్వహించిన డా.సర్వేపల్లి రాధాకృష్ణన్ (1888-1975) జన్మదినం కావడమే. 1962 నుండి 1967 వరకు దేశాధ్యక్షుడిగా పని చేసిన రాధాకృష్ణన్ ప్రారంభంలో ఉపాధ్యాయుడు. స్వయంగా ఉపాధ్యాయుడైన ఆయన విద్య మీద అపార నమ్మకంగలవాడు. విద్యాధికులు మాత్రమే దేశ సౌభాగ్యానికి చుక్కానులని ఆయన విశ్వసించేవారు. వాస్తవానికి ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవాన్ని సెప్టెంబర్ 5న జరపవలసిందిగా కోరిందీ ఆయనే. తన పుట్టిన రోజునాడు తనని అభినందించడానికి వచ్చిన తన అభిమానులను ఆయన ఈ రోజు నన్ను అభినందించడంకంటే ఉపాధ్యాయులను అభినందించడం నాకు ఎక్కువ ఆనందాన్ని ఇస్తుందనడంతో ఆ రోజు నుంచి ఉపాధ్యాయ దినోత్సవాన్ని రాధాకృష్ణన్ పుట్టిన రోజునాడు నిర్వహించడం జరుగుతున్నది. ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా గొప్పవారైన వారిలో అనేకమంది తమ గొప్పతనాన్ని తమ గురువులకు ఆపాదించడం మనం చూస్తూనే ఉన్నాం.

“మాతృదేవోభవ – పితృదేవోభవ – ఆచార్యదేవోభవ” అన్నారు పెద్దలు. తల్లి, తండ్రి తరువాత స్థానం గురువుదే అని స్పష్టం చేశారు. “గురువు” అనే పదానికి ప్రత్యేకమైన అర్ధముంది. “గు” అంటే చీకటి. “రు” అంటే తొలగించు అని అర్ధం. అజ్ఞానమనే చీకటిని తొలగిస్తాడు కాబట్టి గురువు అనే పేరు స్థిరపడిపోయింది. “గు” అంటే గుహ్యమైనది, తెలియనిది. “రు” అంటే దానిని రుచ్యము చేసేది. అంటే ఆ రహస్యమైన దానిని తెలియపరిచేది. ప్రేమ, ఆప్యాతలకు చిహ్నంగా నిలిచే గురువు విద్యార్ధుల కలలను నిజం చేసే ప్రత్యక్ష దైవం. సాక్షాత్తూ భగవంతుడే తనకు మారుగా ఉపాధ్యాయుణ్ణి పంపిస్తే విద్యార్ధులు మాత్రం ఆయన్ను విస్మరించి మార్కుల కోసం, పరీక్షా ఫలితాలకోసం గుళ్ళూ, గోపురాల చుట్టూ తిరగడం శోచనీయం. ప్రయత్నం మానవ లక్షణం. విద్యార్ధి చేసే ప్రతి ప్రయత్నానికీ గురువు ఆశీస్సులు ఉంటాయి, ఉత్సాహ ప్రోత్సాహాలుంటాయి. గురువు నుంచి వాటిని పొందడం ముందుగా విద్యార్ధి కర్తవ్యం. అది అతని బాధ్యత కూడా. బాధ్యతను విస్మరిస్తే భగవంతుడు కూడా ఏమీ చెయ్యలేడనే వాస్తవాన్ని తల్లిదండ్రులు తమ పిల్లలకు చెప్పడం వారి బాధ్యత. ఒక కుటుంబంలాంటి సమాజంలో ఎవరు ఏ బాధ్యతను నిర్వహిస్తున్నా గురువు నిర్వహించే బాధ్యత సాటిలేనిది. దేనితోనూ పోల్చడానికి వీలులేనిది. ఎందుకంటే గురువు జీవితాన్ని మారుస్తాడు. ఒక తల్లి లేదా తండ్రి తమ తమ కుటుంబాలపై ప్రభావం చూపవచ్చు. కాని ఒక గురువు బాధ్యత ఆ సమాజం పైనే తీవ్ర ప్రభావాన్ని చూపుతుంది. గురువు జాతీయ నిర్మాణకర్త కాబట్టి కర్తవ్య నిర్వహణలో ఎల్లవేళలా అప్రమత్తంగా ఉంటాడు.

ఇక్కడ గురు శిష్య సంబంధం కూడా చర్చించతగ్గది. ఎందుకంటే విద్యార్ధుల మనసును విశ్లేషించడంలో ఉపాధ్యాయుడు ఎంతో ముందుంటాడు. అందుకోసం అతడు ఆ విద్యార్ధితో ఎంతో చనువుగా మెలుగుతాడు. అతనితో స్నేహం చేస్తాడు. అతనిలోకి పరకాయ ప్రవేశం చేస్తాడు. ఇదంతా జరగాలంటే ఆ ఉపాధ్యాయుడికి ఎంతో సహనం అవసరం. అసహనం ఎదుటి వారి ఆత్మస్థైర్యాన్ని దెబ్బతీస్తుంది కాబట్టి శాంతానికి చిహ్నంగా ఉపాధ్యాయుడు ఎల్లప్పుడూ నిలిచివుంటాడు. అంతే కాదు ఉపాధ్యాయుడు విద్యార్ధుల భవిష్యత్తును సన్మార్గంలోకి తీసుకెళ్ళే డ్రైవర్‌గానూ, వారి మానసిక ఉన్నతికి పాటుపడే వైద్యుడుగానూ, వివిధ రకాల పరిస్థితులను విడమరచి చెప్పడంలో సైంటిస్టుగానూ, కలబోసి వివరిస్తూ ఆపైవచ్చే ఫలితాన్ని చూపేందుకు వంటవాడిగానూ, అతనికి బలమైన నిర్మాణాత్మక శక్తినిచ్చేందుకు కాంట్రాక్టర్‌గానూ …ఇలా సంఘంలో ప్రతి వృత్తినీ తనలో ఇముడ్చుకొని, తానే అన్ని వృత్తులని నిర్వహించేవాడిగా విద్యార్ధికి సంపూర్ణ అవగాహన కలిగేట్లు చేస్తాడు.

విద్యార్ధి కూడా ఆ విద్యాలయంలో తన విద్య పూర్తి కాగానే ఆ ఉపాధ్యాయుడితో తన పని పూర్తై పోయిందనుకోకూడదు. విద్యాలయంనుంచి బైటికొచ్చాకే అతనికి ఉపాధ్యాయుడి సందేశం అవసరమవుతుంది. అప్పటివరకు కంటికి రెప్పలా చూసుకున్న ఉపాధ్యాయుడి స్థానంలో అతనికి ఆ ఉపాధ్యాయుడి సందేశం మాత్రమే తోడుగా ఉంటుంది. కాబట్టి ఉపాధ్యాయుడి దగ్గర్నుంచి అప్పటివరకు తాను నేర్చుకున్న నడవడి, క్రమశిక్షణ మాత్రమే అతను పై అంతస్తులకు ఎదిగేందుకు దోహదపడతాయి. ఇప్పుడే విద్యార్ధి అత్యంత జాగరూకతతో నడుచుకోవాలి. ఇది అతని భవిష్యత్తుపై తీవ్ర ప్రభావాన్ని చూపుతుంది కాబట్టి తన గురువును తలుచుకుంటూ అడుగులేస్తే ఆ అడుగులు మరి అభ్యుదయంవైపే చకాచకా సగుతాయనడంలో ఎటువంటి సందేహం లేదు.

మాజీ రాష్ట్రపతి కలాం కూడా గతంలో ఉపాధ్యాయుడే. పదవీ విరమణ అనంతరం ఆయన మరలా ఉపాధ్యాయ వృత్తిని చేపడుతుండడం ఉపాధ్యాయ వృత్తి ఔన్నత్యాన్నీ, విశిష్టతను తెలియజేస్తుంది. ప్రపంచంలో “సార్” అని ప్రతిఒక్కరూ సంబోధించతగ్గ ఏకైక వ్యక్తి ఉపాధ్యాయుడు మాత్రమే. దేశాధ్యక్షుడు సైతం “సార్” అని సంబోధించవలసిన ఏకైక వ్యక్తి ఉపాధ్యాయుడు మాత్రమే.

సమాజ నిర్మాణంలో కీలకపాత్ర వహించే ఉపాధ్యాయుడి పేరు మీద ఒక ప్రత్యేక రోజుని ఏర్పాటు చేసి ఆ వృత్తిని గౌరవిస్తుండడం మన సంస్కృతిలో నేడు అంతర్భాగమై పోయింది. ఇది ఎంతైనా గర్వించతగ్గ విషయం. ఇది సర్వత్రా వాంచనీయం. ఈ రోజుని ప్రతి విద్యాలయంలోనూ ఎంతో ఘనంగా నిర్వహించాలి. ఉపాధ్యాయులను ఘనంగా సత్కరించడం ద్వారా వారి సేవలను గౌరవించాలి. వారి ఆదర్శాలను అనుసరించాలి. ఒకప్పుడు బ్రతకలేక బడి పంతులు అనిపించుకున్న వృత్తి నేడు నేడు బ్రతుకు కొరకు బడి పంతులు అని వేనోళ్ళ కీర్తించబడుతుందంటే అందుకు కారణం సంఘ నిర్మాణంలో ఉపాధ్యాయుడు నిర్వర్తించిన పాత్రతప్ప మరోటి కాదు.

ప్రపంచ ఉపాధ్యాయుల దినోత్సవం అక్టోబరు 5 వ తేదీన జరుపుకుంటారు.

ஆசிரியப்பணி அறப்பணி என்பார்கள். அத்தகைய ஆசிரியர்களை வணங்கி அவர்களின் சேவையை நினைவு கூறும் நாளே ஆசிரியர் தினம். ஆசிரியராய் வாழ்வைத் தொடங்கி நாட்டின் முதல் குடிமகனாக உயர்ந்த சர்வப்பள்ளி ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் அவர்கள் பிறந்த நாளை நாடுமுழுவதும் ஆசிரியர் தினமாக கொண்டாடுகின்றனர். ஆசிரியரை பெருமைப் படுத்துவோம் ஆசிரியர்களை பெருமைப்படுத்தும் விதமாக இந்திய நாட்டின் முதல் குடிமகனாய் (ஜனாதிபதி) இருந்த பேராசிரியர் டாக்டர் சர்வபள்ளி ராதாகிருஷ்ணன், 1888 செப்டம்பர் 5-ம் தேதி திருத்தணி அருகே உள்ள சர்வபள்ளி என்ற கிராமத்தில் பிறந்தார். தன் திறமையால் பேராசிரியராகவும், பல்கலைக் கழகங்களின் துணை வேந்தராகவும், இந்திய அரசின் தூதராகவும் பணியாற்றிய மேதை ராதாகிருஷ்ணன்..! இந்தியாவின் துணை ஜனாதிபதியாகவும், ஜனாதிபதியாகவும் இருந்த ராதாகிருஷ்ணன நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சிக்கு பாடுபட்டார். இவரைப் பல்வேறு விருதுகள் தேடி வந்தன. இள வயதிலேயே ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் பல நூல்களை எழுதித் தனது எழுத்தாற்றலை அனைவரும் அறியும்படி செய்தார். இவர் மேடைப் பேச்சிலும் வல்லவர். வெளிநாடுகளில் அவர் ஆற்றிய சிறப்புரைகள் இந்தியாவுக்குப் பெருமை சேர்த்தன. டாக்டர் ராதா கிருஷ்ணனுக்கு அவருடைய சேவையை பாராட்டி 133 கௌரவ டாக்டர் பட்டங்கள் வரை கிடைத்துள்ளன. எளிமையான வாழ்க்கை நாட்டின் 2-வது ஜனாதிபதியாக பொறுப்பேற்று திறம்பட பணியாற்றிய டாக்டர் ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் பதவி காலம் முடிந்ததும், சென்னை மைலாப்பூரில் உள்ள அவருடைய சொந்த பங்களாவில் இறுதி காலம் வரை வாழ்ந்தார். அவர் எப்படி எளிமையாக வாழ்ந்தாரோ அதே போல் அவர் வசித்த பங்களாவும் ஆடம்பரமான அழகு வேலைப்பாடுகள் இன்றி அன்று கண்ட நிலையில் கம்பீரமாக காட்சி அளிக்கிறது. இவர் 1975, ஏப்ரல் 17-ம் தேதி மறைந்தார். அவரது சேவையைப் பாராட்டி சென்னையில் அவர் இல்லம் அமைந்துள்ள சாலைக்கு ‘டாக்டர் ராதாகிருஷ்ணன சாலை’ எனப் பெயரிடப்படுள்ளது. ஆசிரியர் தினத்தின் போது ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு மாநில விருதும், தேசிய விருதும் வழங்கிச் சிறப்பிக்கப்படுகின்றன. 1997-ம் ஆண்டு முதல் தமிழக அரசு நல்லாசிரியர் விருதை ‘டாக்டர் ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் விருது’ என்னும் பெயரில் வழங்கி வருகிறது. தாயும் தந்தையும் குழந்தையை உலகுக்கு தருகின்றனர். ஆனால், ஓர் ஆசிரியர் உலகத்தையை குழந்தைக்கு தருகிறார் என்றால் மிகை இல்லை. ஆசிரியர் அரவணைப்புடன் கல்வி போதிப்பவர், மாணவனின் திறமைகளையும் வெளிக் கொண்டு வர விரும்புவர். எனவேதான் ஆசிரியர் பணியை ‘புனிதமான தொழில்’ (Noble Profession)என்கிறார்கள். ‘மாதா, பிதா, குரு, தெய்வம்’ என இந்தியாவில் பெற்ற தாய் – தந்தைக்கு அடுத்த இடத்தை ஆசிரியருக்கு வழங்கி இருக்கிறார்கள். ஆசிரியருக்கு அடுத்த இடம்தான் இறைவனுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. நாம் அனைவரும் ஏதாவது ஒருவகையில் ஆசிரியர்களுக்குக் கடமைப்பட்டவர்களாக இருக்கிறோம்.அறிவுப்படையை உருவாக்கும் பொறுப்பை கடமையாக கொண்ட ஆசிரியர்களை அனைவரும் போற்றி பாராட்டுவோம்.
