Date Of Hug Day {*February 12*} National Hugging Day January 21
Sunday, February 12, 2017: Hug Day
National Hugging Day is an annual unofficial event which occurs on January 21 but is not a public holiday. The day was launched on January 21, 1986 in Clio, Michigan, USA. The idea of National Hug Day is to encourage everyone to hug family and friends more often. Whether you hug a family member or a friend or a stranger, the mental and physical health benefits are the same.
It is scientifically proven fact that when couples hug for 20 seconds, their levels of oxytocin (a ‘feel-good’ chemical) increases. Those huggers in loving relationships had the highest increases. A brief hug and 10 minutes of hand holding with a romantic partner also greatly reduces the harmful physical effects of stress. Hugging can also help build a good immune system, decrease the risk of heart disease, and decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol in women. In a study, adults who had no contact with people had higher blood pressure and heart rate. Other studies have indicated that the touch of a friend might not be as helpful as the touch of a partner but should not be avoided.
